Ginnie Springs Adventure,
January 18 - 20
Organised by
Well, let’s see . . . It was a dark and stormy night
. . . actually both nights . . .
Rain, gale-force winds, lightning, a tornado
watch, possible snow flurries – it was great!!!
We all showed up Friday evening around dusk
and got set up, had dinner, and got a fire going.
Stew seemed to be a common theme this weekend
and was understandable considering the weather.
Everyone had different recipes, and each was
unique. After everyone ambled off to sleep, the rain
started up and kept coming down till dawn.
Saturday, the rain stayed away until the afternoon
so the kids ran off to catch and release a
couple dozen bream and we got some bike riding in.
Barbara worked with Savannah and Lauren on their
Advanced OW certs while a couple of us pulled together
gear and headed for Ginnie Spring. Bob and
his family friend Troy went in and explored the cavern
and out into the river afterwards - anyone up for
crawfish? When they got back to the boil, Barbara
had shown up with the girls. We took Savannah
back to show her around the cavern and the famous
Ginnie grate, while Barbara worked with Lauren out
in the boil. About the time Barbara made her way
back into the cavern, Bob and Troy needed to exit
and that’s when the rain started – big time.
Remember that tornado watch I mentioned!!
Lightning crashing down around the park made our
minds up pretty quickly, and we beat a hasty retreat
for hot showers and shelter. That night with driving
winds and rain, we packed it in and went to Sonny’s
for dinner – really roughing it!! When we stopped
on the way back for gas and lottery tickets, the talk
at the local Shell was of possible snow flurries that
night if the rain kept up. It didn’t, darn it, but it was
cold.
Sunday we got a fire started early and thanked
Barbara for having some extra fire wood to keep it
going while we all broke camp and headed back to
civilization.
Can’t wait to go back. Ya’ll don’t know what
you missed. Make sure to come to the next one,
maybe we can arrange a tsunami!!
