Blue Heron Bridge, the Search for the Sidegill Sea Slug

Organised by George McGuire

Saturday morning, January 26, seven LMDC divers (George McGuire, Eric Davies, Don Russ, Sigornee Colby, Cherie Berry, and Becca and Karl Hageman) went looking for the elusive sidegill sea slug in Lake Worth beneath the Blue Heron Bridge. The weather was beautiful and the water smooth with good visibility and 73 degrees temperature. We exited the water 75 minutes after entering without having found the slug, but we saw lots of other remarkable and uncommon creatures. Among the rare creatures we found were a sea robin, a diurnal octopus, a stargazer, a young hairy blenny, and an eyed flounder. We also found a number of other more common creatures including Atlantic spadefish, young barracuda, banded coral shrimp, and the biggest yellow-lined arrow crabs in Florida. In some ways this dive site is like our very own Lembeh Strait. After diving, we went to the Tiki Hut for a late lunch. We rejoiced in what we had seen and consoled ourselves for not finding the slug. It remains elusive, and that gives us a reason to come back and search some more. George McGuire and Eric Davies took the photos.
