DiveQuest 22nd February 2009

Organised by Jim Kennedy

When Club members attending the February 22nd Disney DiveQuest event met at 6:30 on Sunday night they had no idea what to expect.  Everyone was aware of the outstanding value the Club provided by getting the trip at about ½ of the regular price of $175.00 but with the exception of a couple members, this was a totally new and unusual dive situation.   Imagine great visibility, no current, no boat ride to the dive site, no sea sickness and a behind the scenes tour to give you all the facts about your dive.  That had to be the best dive site briefing ever heard!

We were diving in the Living Seas at Walt Disney World and accompanied by Disney divers and a videographer.  Even the topside view provides an unusual and very seldom seen experience.

The salt-water tank provides 203 feet of visibility and thousands of native Caribbean creatures including tropical fish, sharks, stingrays, giant green sea turtles, and corals.  The coral is of course artificial, but very life like.  In addition to this scuba experience many members commented on how they enjoyed being part of the show, by waving to people through the 56’ giant windows around the Living Seas Pavilion.
Our DiveQuest experience lasted approximately 3 hours and was exactly what you have come to expect from a Disney World experience, first class and very well choreographed.  The back Stage tour and approximate 45 minute dive were outstanding. The dive was video-taped and compiled with some standard video footage to provide a great way of documenting the dive experience.  After the dive and hot showers we got a chance to view and purchase the video. We also received a certificate of completion, along with an Epcot® DiveQuest T-shirt and refreshments. All diving equipment was provided and included in the cost.  We only needed 1 item, a bathing suit.  Everything else was provided.
As an added bonus we learned that all proceeds from the DiveQuest operation are given to the Disney Wild Life Conservation Fund.  If you need a refresher dive or your just getting into diving and want a little experience before you hit the dive boats, this is the one to do!!
